The Corinthian Room | 05:26AM Jul 14, 2007

The Corinthian Room was a restaurant in an old Philadelphia Department store, Strawbridge & Clothier. It was the last of the old time stores that existed in Philadelphia since the 1880's. It was eventually bought by a chain store with no local roots. The Corinthian Room was a nice place to have a good meal during a shopping trip. It was basically subsidized by the store, since it also made good business sense to keep shoppers shopping after their meals. It was a shame to see it finally go. You could rely on a decent meal at a reasonable price with real utensils and real tablecloths. I used to go on yearly Christmas shopping trips with my Mother. It was a traditional trip that was all the more special in a special place. The newest owners promised not to close the downtown "flagship" store. Strawbridge's as it was re-christened, was closed on May 1, 2006 and with it the Corinthian Room.
